Deep in the Sardinian countryside lies one of the island’s most extraordinary places: Su Nuraxi di Barumini, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the best-preserved example of the mysterious stone towers known as nuraghi. Built more than 3,500 years ago during the Bronze Age, the complex once formed the heart of a thriving prehistoric village surrounded by massive basalt towers and defensive walls.
Our day will begin in Cagliari, where we’ll travel inland through the rolling plains of southern Sardinia. After about an hour on the road we’ll arrive in the quiet village of Barumini, where the ancient fortress rises from the landscape like something from another world.
With a local guide, we’ll wander through the labyrinth of stone towers and narrow passageways, climbing into the interior chambers and courtyards where the Nuragic people once lived thousands of years ago. Guided visits are required at the site and typically last about one hour, helping bring the stories and mysteries of this ancient civilization to life.
After exploring the ruins, we’ll slow down over a long Sardinian lunch in the countryside, enjoying local cheeses, handmade pasta, and regional wines before returning to Cagliari in the afternoon.
