Panarea sits within a small cluster of volcanic islets and rocks including Basiluzzo, Spinazzola, Dattilo, Lisca Bianca, Bottaro, Lisca Nera, Panarelli and Le Formiche, and is often described as a micro-archipelago between Lipari and Stromboli.
Basiluzzo is the largest of the islets, with clear water and traces of ancient Roman settlement. Lisca Bianca and Bottaro are known for underwater fumaroles — bubbles of volcanic gas rising from the seabed — and the waters around Dattilo, Lisca Bianca, Basiluzzo, Lisca Nera and Bottaro are known for snorkelling and diving.
